The Importance of House Numbers
Creative House Number Ideas. House numbers are so important and yet they are completely overlooked. Many drivers will be able to tell you a story on how they could not find someplace they were looking for and how frustrated they were at times looking for a particular address. In many cases, the lack of numbers is so high that you can’t even work out where a place should be by counting up or down from other properties that are marked.
Many people underestimate how important their house numbers are from receiving deliveries to visiting with friends and even for the emergency services. These numbers play a big part in keeping things moving.
So you have decided you want to display a decent number on your property what are the options? There are three main types of house numbers, regular daytime numbers, day/night reflective numbers and day/night glow in the dark numbers. Read also: Backyard Patio Design Ideas
Firstly let’s start with the regular numbers and these may be made from brass, stainless steel, plastic, wood or resin. These regular numbers are the cheapest and most abundant but also the least useful, they are fine for daytime hours but as soon as night comes along they vanish and become useless. This then brings us to the day/night reflective and glow in the dark numbers.
Which of these two types of numbers you should use will depend entirely on your unique situation. The second type of reflective numbers are more expensive and will work at there best when they’re mounted close to the road edge allowing them to have direct contact with passing vehicle headlights. If the reflective numbers will be set back from the road edge by more than a couple of meters or a few feet then these numbers will have very little chance to reflect light and thus be seen by passing motorists. This type of number also needs to be in duplicate so that it directly faces vehicles coming in both directions.
If the numbers will be set back from the road edge or they will be placed in an area with little to no street light then the most expensive glow in the dark number is the best option. This type of number gives off its own light and will not need to be in duplicate or seen by vehicle headlights to illuminate.
Quality glow in the dark house numbers utilize the latest strontium aluminate technology with very high loading and have the ability to absorb and store a large amount of daylight and then give it back through the night. The manufacturing process and raw material cost make it the most expensive of the three house number types.
In more and more places it is becoming mandatory to have a clearly legible number of a minimum size and some local laws even stating that the numbers must be visible at night. In the end whether mandatory or not having clearly legible numbers is just good sense and having them clean and well displayed helps all of us.
